Feast of Saint Charles Borromeo
📅 Every year, on 4 November
On 4 November Tagliolo Monferrato celebrates its patron Saint Charles Borromeo; the town also preserves the Castello di Tagliolo Monferrato.
The name comes from Taliolus, or Talliolus, perhaps for a stretch of ground cleared of wood. In 976 the emperor Otto I granted the place in fief to the Aleramici; on monte Colma the remains of the women's monastery of Santa Maria di Bano are still there. In 1750 the marriage of Teresa Gentile to Costantino Pinelli carried the fief to the Pinelli Gentile, who own the castle and live there.
The castle sits above the village, on a stone retaining wall. Its oldest part is the square tower, of the tenth century, which by common belief watched for Saracen raids; in the cellars below, wine has been made and kept for five hundred years.
