Molare

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,269 · Postal code: 15074

The first settlement stood at Ceriato, a name said to come from Ceres, goddess of the harvest. Much later, in 1907, after years of crisis and abandoned farmland, a special commissioner set a dam on the Orba in motion; then the Great War came and the works slowed down.

On 13 August 1935, after days of rain and with an old landslide on the move again, the Bric Zerbino saddle — one of the two dams holding Lake Ortiglieto — gave way and sent the whole reservoir down the valley. Molare, along the river and the bridges, and Ovada were hit; the victims were put at one hundred and eleven.

Saint Bernard, patron of the land of the Sagra del Polentone

📅 Every year, on 20 August; the Sagra del Polentone has been the town's main feast for decades

Molare celebrates Saint Bernard on 20 August; the Sagra del Polentone, officially held since the first half of the 20th century, has for decades been the town's most important feast, rooted in a folk tradition about a dish of hot polenta once offered by a local family.
