Rocca Grimalda

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,495 · Postal code: 15078

Rocca Grimalda sits on a spur above the left bank of the Orba and has had three names: Rocca Val d'Orba, then Rocca de' Trotti after the fief went to Galeazzo Trotti in 1444, and at last today's, from the Grimaldi, the Genoese buyers whose lozenges fill its arms. From Genoa they brought the cult of Saint Limbania and the vine, which replaced the woods where brigandage thrived.

The castle, a thirteenth-century military work made a manor house in the eighteenth, has a round tower of five floors with a spiral stair cut into the wall: the prisons were inside, and the inner walls still hold the prisoners' writing. Beside it, the Porta is the only way in.
