Casaleggio Boiro

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 401 · Postal code: 15070

Casaleggio Boiro lies in the upper Monferrato, in the Ovadese named after Ovada, and part of its land belongs to the Capanne di Marcarolo park. In 1164 Frederick Barbarossa confirmed possession of the place to William the Old, marquis of Monferrato; until 1863 the village was simply Casaleggio.

The town arms show a stone castle on a green mount, with three ears of wheat. The castle really is there, alone on a knoll away from the village, a small church at its foot. Over the door a carved lintel shows a knight with shield and lance, a lady between two lions; on his shield an emblem, perhaps a mace or war hammer.
