Grondona

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 545 · Postal code: 15060

The Spinti runs down to the Scrivia and gives the valley its name: Grondona is the only comune lying wholly within it. The village first appears in a document of 1164, in which Frederick Barbarossa confirmed the privileges of Pavia and made it subject to that city. In the thirteenth century it set up its own commune, the first podestà being the local lord.

Above the houses stands a round tower, all that survives of the Fieschi-Doria castle: abandoned since the late eighteenth century, it was brought down in 1934 by a landslide that killed ten people. A ring of projecting corbels and a few narrow openings show on the bare ridge.
