Silvano d'Orba

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,056 · Postal code: 15060

The name is attested from 1198 as Silvanus, and comes from one of those silvani whose job was to watch over the land and keep outsiders from meddling with the rights reserved to those who held it on lease or grant.

In front of the cemetery two towers still stand: they are taken to be what is left of the castrum of Rondinaria, the legendary town at the meeting of the Piota and the Orba, where gold was panned from the sands of both streams. The new cemetery was built right on top of it, reusing the material lying about to save time and money; the two towers were barely saved, and the credit goes to Enrico Belimbau, elected mayor at the end of 1910.
