Sant'Agata Fossili

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 441 · Postal code: 15050

Sant'Agata Fossili lies in the Tortonese hills, in the Ligurian-Piedmontese pre-Apennines. It grew around a chapel to Saint Agatha, who gave the village its name; the chapel is documented only from the thirteenth century, the settlement first appears in 1277. For centuries, though, the place that mattered was Podigliano, now a hamlet, land of the bishop of Tortona and first capital of the domain called the Vescovato.

In the fifteenth century bishop Barbavara won tax exemptions from the Visconti on account of the barren soil; vines arrived only in the second half of the nineteenth century, pushed by the archpriest Corazza. The second name is from 1871, after the many fossils the fields turned up.
