Spineto Scrivia

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 332 · Postal code: 15050

Spineto Scrivia, Spinegh or Spinèj in Piedmontese, is a village in the province of Alessandria, bordering Tortona. Some researchers derive its name from spina, thorn, and connect it with a Templar staging post on the road towards Genoa and the sea. The suffix Scrivia was added only in 1928; the following year neighbouring Paderna was absorbed into the municipality, and it broke away again in 1949.

The community was first governed by consuls, whose acts are still kept in the town archive. The consular assemblies met in a building called the Castello, which held the council room and a chamber known as L'archivio, perhaps the earliest record store; another room served as a prison. Today's town hall is what survives of the old church, its presbytery and priest's house. The arms show three mounts on silver, the middle one taller and set behind, above a silver cross on blue.
