Propata

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 161 · Postal code: 16027

Lake Brugneto, the largest reservoir in Liguria, straddles three comuni, and one of them is Propata, which has 161 residents. Above it Monte Antola reaches 1597 metres.

The parish church of San Lorenzo holds a wooden statue by Anton Maria Maragliano, the Genoese carver whose workshop supplied half of Liguria in the eighteenth century. The village also has a partisan museum, with photographs and documents on the Resistance in the Trebbia valley.

Fun facts about Propata

The patron is Saint Lawrence and the feast falls on 10 August; the parish church of the main village carries his name and dates from the sixteenth century. In the hamlet of Bavastrelli there is a second parish church, San Giacomo, built in 1836 and given its bell tower in 1880; the parish itself was only established there in 1918.

In the 1970s a number of UFO sightings were reported in the village, at the same time as the Pier Fortunato Zanfretta case in nearby Torriglia, one of the most argued-over episodes in Italian ufology. Of an altogether different weight is the memory kept by the partisan museum, with photographs and documents of the Resistance in the Trebbia valley.
