Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Montemarzino, a municipality of 341 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
Montemarzino appears in a document of 1074 as Monsmorixinus, later Monsmorisinus and Montemurixino, forms meaning Monte Mauricino, the hill of the Moors, after a settlement of those people. For centuries an imperial fief of the Oltrepò Pavese, it passed in 1753 from the Spinola marquises to the House of Savoy.
The hamlet of Zebedassi gave its name to a rock: the quarry on the slopes of poggio Brienzone yielded a building stone matching no mineral then known, and they named it zebedassite; later analyses showed it was saponite. At Reguardia stood the elm of Montemarzino, twenty-eight metres tall, adopted by the village and tended for years until Dutch elm disease killed it.
