Momperone

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 219 · Postal code: 15050

Momperone lies in the upper Curone valley, on the right bank of the stream, below a wooded hill. It first appears in a document of 1220 confirming the jurisdiction of the bishops of Tortona, who granted it in fief to the Malaspina. For about two hundred years it then belonged to the joint lordship of a family that had taken its name from the place — before, that was only a title — and that Tortona enrolled in its equestrian order; some of those lords became notaries in the city. The lordship ended in 1412, when Filippo Maria Visconti invested Perino Cameri of Tortona with the fief.

The arms are party per pale: a gold tower masoned black, with five Guelph merlons, on a green plain; beside it a barry of red, gold and blue under a gold chief bearing the black eagle of the Empire. Once the centre of many hamlets, the village is still scattered across nine of them; in 1928 it was abolished as a comune and merged into Brignano-Frascata, regaining independence only in 1947.
