On 16 July Castelnuovo Bormida, a municipality of 680 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint Quiricus (San Quirico).
The name says what is there: a new castle above the bend of the Bormida, with its drawbridge. The shield the comune once used was plainer still: a golden tower on a grassy field, against blue. Of the many feudal lords who followed one another, the Ferrari kept the title even after Monferrato passed to Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, in 1708.
The castle is a heavy block of brick and flaking plaster, windows shuttered in wood, arched doorway framed in terracotta; behind it rises the tower, covered in ivy almost to the roof. The parish church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta was rebuilt in the eighteenth century.
