Cassine

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,048 · Postal code: 15016

The Gothic church of San Francesco is among the most important medieval churches in Piedmont: a terracotta front with hanging arches, a splayed portal, and inside frescoes running from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Nearby stands palazzo Zoppi, born as a fortified house, with fifteenth-century frescoes including a "Game of the Palm" and scenes of hunting and fowling.

In 1231 the comune of Alessandria took Cassine, destroyed it and imposed an annual tribute. Much later a square tower was raised on casa Arcasio and used as a weather observatory. And here, in 1938, Luigi Tenco was born.
