Sezzadio

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,294 · Postal code: 15079

Until 1916 the village was called Sezzè; in Piedmontese it is still Atzé. It lies in the plain of Alessandria, on the right bank of the Bormida, and the first houses are thought to have grown around a posting station on the Roman road from Piacenza to Albenga. Local tradition has Aleramo, founder of the Aleramici, born here; the town arms are a variant of Alessandria's.

The abbey of Santa Giustina was founded in 722 by the Lombard king Liutprand, on his way to Pavia for the translation of Saint Augustine's body; Marquis Oberto enlarged it and the Benedictines kept it until 1474. Its front is brick and river stone, a square tower above.
