Orsara Bormida

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 406 · Postal code: 15010

Orsara Bormida lies on the right bank of the Bormida, in the province of Alessandria; in Piedmontese it is called L'Ursera. The village sits on a knoll, while the hamlets of Moglia, Piano, San Quirico and Uvallare stay lower down; the town's arms carry a red castle beneath a crowned black eagle on gold.

The castle stands on the pale rock shelf that carries the houses. Its watchtower was built in 1000 and in the fourteenth century a second, octagonal tower was added; an oratory adjoins the complex. From the valley you pick out the long wing with red shutters and the tiled roof of the tower.
