Castelnuovo Scrivia

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,414 · Postal code: 15053

Water made this place: here the Grue runs into the Scrivia, and the land is among the most fertile around. Everything has been grown on it, in order: first woad and mulberries, then vegetables and sugar beet, today wheat, maize and cereals. Over the Scrivia runs a nineteenth-century bridge with thirteen masonry arches.

The village was fortified on the order of Theodoric and enlarged by the Lombard king Liutprand in 722. As an ally of Frederick Barbarossa it took part in the destruction of Tortona in 1155 and won privileges in exchange, among them the right to fly the town flag; later Borso d'Este granted exemption from military service, and that too was shown by a flag on the tower. The humanist Matteo Maria Bandello came from here.
