Alzano Scrivia

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 380 · Postal code: 15050

Alzano Scrivia lies just upstream of where the Scrivia joins the Po, on the boundary between the Tortona country and the Lomellina. With Calvignasco, near Milan, it may count as the flattest comune in Italy: its territory rises and falls by a single metre. Floods have remade the landscape more than once.

The place was simply Alzano until 1925, and from 1928 to 1946 it was merged with Molino dei Torti into one comune, Molino Alzano. The Torti had a castle here by the parish church; the Spanish took it, and it was later pulled down. What is left is the silver keep on the arms, on a green plain above a blue wave.
