Guazzora

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 313 · Postal code: 15050

The name comes from the fords. Here the Tanaro and the Scrivia end in the Po, and to move from the Tortona country into the Lomellina, the Voghera or the Pavia lands you had to cross water, on foot or by boat; the place was called Guadatorium after its ferry. The settlement itself, the Curte Guazzatoria, grew up in the thirteenth century among reed beds left by a drained medieval lake.

Guazzora was open ground, unwalled, defended only by a castle: in 1314 Matteo Visconti had Montemerso restored and handed it to the de Curte, the Corti, to secure the Po crossing and the road to Tortona; the river ports were in their keeping. Pavese from the start, it passed to Piedmont in 1748 within the province of Voghera, and only a royal edict of the nineteenth century moved it to the district of Tortona. Its arms hold castle and farmland together: a red tower under a golden G and, in the other field, a cornucopia crowned with wheat ears and full of fruit.
