Villaromagnano

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 700 · Postal code: 15050

The name comes from villa romaniani, a quadrangle of houses packed around a small courtyard, with a big block in the middle serving as a tower. It sits on the hills south-east of Tortona, on the Ossona stream, where villae stood in the time of Julius Caesar; when the Roman empire ended the village was christianised and the churches of San Michele and San Giovanni went up.

The parish church still carries the first of those names, San Michele Arcangelo, also the patron. Its front is bare brick, a Latin plaque over the doorway, the clock tower rising behind. Fonti, a hamlet, has its own chapel, the Madonnina di Fonti.
