Sarezzano

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,193 · Postal code: 15050

Sarezzano sits on a hill on the left bank of the Grue. The monks Ruffino and Venanzio withdrew here and were buried here; their relics, first kept in the pieve of San Michele, later passed to the little castle church. Beside them, in 1585, the Codex Purpureus turned up: the four gospels on reddish parchment, in a wooden case. Lost again, it resurfaced in 1872.

The castle church, struck by lightning and rebuilt, was the parish church until the fifties, when a new one dedicated to Saints Ruffino and Venanzio replaced it at the foot of the hill. The old one keeps its walls of river stone and brick and its clock tower.
