Borghetto di Borbera

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,991 · Postal code: 15060

The name says two things. Burchetus, Burghetus, the small borough; and it was first known as the Borgo degli Aimerici, after the family, related to the bishop-counts of Tortona, that founded it within the thirteenth century. The rest is the torrent: Borbera comes from the old Bor, “running water”.

At the end of via Caminata the medieval gate still opens. It led to the castle on the right bank, which the floods of the Borbera took apart completely. Piedmontese by region, Ligurian by history: until 1859 it lay in the province of Novi, in the Genoa division, and San Vittore's bell tower ends in a Ligurian onion spire.
