Vignole Borbera

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,245 · Postal code: 15060

The name comes from the Latin Vineola, a small plot planted with vines, with the Borbera stream added, on whose bed the village spreads. It may have begun as farmland of Roman Libarna; the first certain notice is from the year 1000, when it appears as land of the abbey of San Pietro di Precipiano, then a centre of its own.

After that Vignole changed master and region a remarkable number of times: Genoa, the duchy of Milan, Savoy, the Ligurian Republic, the French empire, and from 1815 the province of Novi in Liguria. It was detached only by the Rattazzi decree of 1859, shortly before unification.
