Isola Sant'Antonio

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 734 · Postal code: 15050

Isola Sant'Antonio lies on the right bank of the Po, on the flood plain of Tanaro and Scrivia: marsh and islets cut by channels, and the name comes from that landscape and a chapel to the saint. With Molino dei Torti it is Piedmont's lowest municipality, and inside its land sits San Pio, which belongs to Pieve del Cairo: a piece of Lombardy within Piedmont.

In 1545 the Isimbardi marquises settled farmers here to work the rich soil. It belonged to the Lomellina: in 1800 Napoleon moved it to Alluvioni Cambiò, then the king of Sardinia made it a commune and sent it back. Piedmont kept it only from 1878.
