Montecastello

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 324 · Postal code: 15040

Montecastello sits on a hill at the end of the Basso Monferrato, above the Tanaro near its junction with the Bormida. In 967 Otto I granted the place to Aleramo, who passed it to the Bellingeri of Pavia with leave to fortify it: around an older tower they raised the castle that still stands over the houses, made a lordly residence in the eighteenth century and private ever since. In 1745 Charles Emmanuel III set his headquarters there during the battle of Bassignana.

In 1928 the fascist mergers abolished the comune: its land went to Pietra Marazzi and partly to Bassignana; autonomy returned only in 1956. The arms show the castle, topped by an eagle, with a Maltese cross between two stars and the motto astri tui semper meminisse. On the front of the parish church of Santa Maria di Ponzano stands Saint George, patron of the older church outside the village from which the parish came.
