Pietra Marazzi

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 900 · Postal code: 15040

The name has two readings: some derive it from the Latin Petra Maricorum, after the Marici, the Ligurian tribe that founded the place; others from Petra Maratiorum, after the noble Marazzi who held the village in fief. On the golden field of the arms stands, in blue letters, the inscription Petra Maratiorum.

The old core sits on a knoll above the left bank of the Tanaro, closed on three sides by the Bricco di San Giovanni, Monte Mariano and Bricco Sant'Ilario; the Romans came in 222 BC. South of it the hamlet Pavone looks down from 137 metres on the mouth of the Bormida. San Martino, the parish church, shows bare brick, three rose windows and an octagonal lantern.
