A remarkable share of the world's fine Italian jewellery passes through the hands of Valenza. Since the mid-nineteenth century this Monferrato town of 19,671 on the Po river has been the goldsmiths' capital: hundreds of workshops, the birthplace of Damiani (1924), and the largest Bulgari manufacture anywhere — all concentrated in a district without equal. Its jewellery schools train craftsmen for half the luxury world.
The paradox is the charm: outside the ateliers, Valenza remains a quiet provincial town between wine hills and river. Visitors can catch the district's exhibitions and understand why "made in Valenza" works, in the trade, as a de facto mark of origin.
