Rivarone

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 363 · Postal code: 15040

The first certain record is a document of 977 in which Otto I invested the bishop of Pavia with Bassignana and Rivarone, the two names side by side. The pairing returned almost a thousand years later, and not in Rivarone's favour: in 1928 the comune was abolished and its territory attached to Bassignana. It was restored in 1948.

The village stands on the plain beside the Tanaro. It gives its name to a cherry, the precoce di Rivarone, which ripens before the rest; the variety is thought to have been raised from seed and selected locally. The arms show a blue lion, crowned in gold, crossing a field banded black and silver.
