Pecetto di Valenza

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,233 · Postal code: 15040

The old name was Pecetum Valentinum: the village stood beside Valenza, the stronghold guarding the Po crossings. It grew around a large Roman villa, country house, farm and workshop at once, above a branch of the via Julia Augusta towards present-day Asti; remains of the road have surfaced lower down, at Pellizzari.

On the tuff cliff above the village stood a castle, named in a thirteenth-century imperial bull among the Monferrato marquises' holdings. Fought over by Visconti and Aleramici, it was destroyed in 1557 in the war between French and Spanish: left are the foundations of a tower and the name La Rocca, where old astronomical instruments now stand.
