Berzano di Tortona

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 171 · Postal code: 15050

Berzano di Tortona sits on the watershed between the Grue valley and the lower Curone, its people spread among the hamlets of Cappellette, Valbona, Chiesa, Magostino and Inselmina. The name comes from the Latin Berceolus, hedge or garden. A Roman origin is ruled out: nothing of that age has ever turned up, and the field tracks ignore the centuriation. The likeliest guess, unproven, is a castrum born during the Lombard invasions, when local people moved to ground easier to defend. Until the Sixties the symbol of the comune was the roverone, an oak almost a thousand years old.

The first mention is from 998, in a deed by which the bishop of Tortona sold duke Otto several estates, among them Bersanum Derthonensium. Berzano later fell within the fief of Volpedo, which the Visconti granted to Pietro Cameri of Tortona; on his death his will passed it to the Fabbrica of Milan cathedral, then still going up, on two conditions: no taxes above a set sum and no selling it on. The Fabbrica held it until 1733, when debt forced the sale. A comune in its own right from the nineteenth century, it was merged into Volpedo from 1928 to 1947.
