Feast of Saint Ambrose
📅 Every year, on 7 December
On 7 December Monleale celebrates its patron Saint Ambrose, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The name first appears in a document of 1172: the monte della Forca becomes Mons Legalis there. It seems to come from monte plus the personal name Leale; another idea ties it to legis, the law, and to the executions carried out up there. The same text mentions a castle with moats and three towers.
Nothing is left of it: the men of Volpedo, just across the Curone, burned it down and no one rebuilt it. In 1513 the duke of Milan sent a commissioner who, as punishment, had Volpedo's walls torn down with three hundred men from Monleale. The new centre later slid down to the valley; the old borgo stayed on top.
