Pozzolo Formigaro

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,910 · Postal code: 15068

On the first half of the name the local historians agree: Pozzolo means the wells of the earliest settlements. On the second they do not. Canon Bottazzi held that it was Fornuce to begin with and that Formigaro arose to avoid a clash of names; in 1899 Ferretti and Remotti derived it from overcrowding.

The answer may lie in a chronicle of Tortona written around 1580 and printed only in 2001: almost every house, it says, has a well dug into earth and gravel; and the place is called Formigaro after the great ants of that countryside, which force the grain to be cut still a little green and carried off at once.
