Saint Peter, patron of the land of the Parco Castello
📅 Every year, on the Monday after the third Sunday of September
Cassano Spinola celebrates Saint Peter on the Monday after the third Sunday of September, in the church dedicated to him.
The village first appears in a diploma of 1014 confirming local property to the abbey of Lucedio. A castle stood on the height above the houses, held by the Spinola for nearly five centuries. French troops passing through at the end of the fifteenth century besieged and sacked the village; the castle never recovered, and after the local branch died out it was pulled down in 1805.
In 2018 the comune absorbed Gavazzana, and the new arms tell the story: Cassano's thorn branch stays, the gold tower comes from Gavazzana, and the band is at once the Scrivia, on whose right bank the village lies, and the via Postumia, the road that made it grow.
