Pomaro Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 390 · Postal code: 15040

Pomaro first turns up in an edict of Frederick Barbarossa in 1156; its name comes from the Latin pomarium, an orchard. The village sits on a knoll under the castle, where the Lomellina plain gives way to the hills of Monferrato; the first houses stood inside a walled receptum, and the watchtower still stands near the square.

In October 1637 the Spanish under the marquis of Leganés pulled down the outer defences, but the duke of Créquy arrived and drove them off; they came back the next September and won, but only after mining the castle. A manuscript of the late seventeenth century says one room was left. From 1685 the Ardizzone rebuilt it as a residence.
