Saint Cyriacus and Pentecost, patrons of the land of the Torre Paleologa
📅 Every year, on Pentecost Tuesday
San Salvatore Monferrato celebrates Saint Cyriacus together with Pentecost on Pentecost Tuesday.
The town's first name was Villa ad Vites, the villa among the vines, and from 1048 it appears as castrum Sancti Salvatoris. The vines are still there: this is the lower Monferrato, hills and rows of vines as far as the eye can see. At the end of the nineteenth century, though, phylloxera brought the crop to its knees.
Above the town stands the Torre Paleologa, twenty-four metres, built in 1413 by Theodore II Palaiologos, who then governed the Monferrato. After the war recovery came from manufacturing and from the goldsmiths' district of neighbouring Valenza, which drew people to San Salvatore above all from two distant towns: Agerola and Leonforte.
