Villanova Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,849 · Postal code: 15030

Villanova Monferrato is not in the Monferrato: it sits on the left bank of the Po, the northernmost town of the Alessandria province, near Vercelli and the Lombard border. It began in 1136 as a cluster of houses under the bishops of Vercelli, probably to mind the woods at the Sesia confluence.

In 1197 Vercelli made it a free borough to expand against the marquisate of Monferrato, and in 1212 paid eighteen peasant families to move in and stay, taking land from Candia Lomellina and Cozzo. Facing the town hall, the oratory of the San Michele confraternity now serves as an auditorium.
