Rive

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 469 · Postal code: 13030

Rive comes from the Latin ripae, the strip of land a stream's waters reach; a local historian put it at the end of the morainic ridge running west. The coat of arms keeps both: three poplars on three rounded hills, two watercourses joining below.

It stands on the right bank of the Marcova, among rice fields south of Vercelli, first recorded in 1268, when the Ghibelline Tizzoni held a castle here. Fire destroyed about two thirds; halving the hearth tax for five years helped prevent its abandonment. By 1704 the castle, damaged by French troops, was little more than a farmstead; its battlemented brick tower still rises above the roofs.
