Feast of Saint Matthew
📅 Every year, on 21 September
On 21 September Caresana celebrates Saint Matthew; the village is also known for the Corsa dei buoi, an ox race for Saint George run every year without interruption since 1236.
In 882 Charles the Fat gave the curtis of Caresana to the church of Vercelli; a century later it had a court and a landing on the Sesia. In 1255 it became a free borough with Vercelli's own privilege, while the canons of Sant'Eusebio founded Gazzo nearby. Gazzo was abandoned in 1330 and Caresana rebuilt further along as a burgum novum, probably today's village with its grid plan.
The parish church of San Matteo lost part of its front to the weather; eleven years later the old bell tower came down and was rebuilt 36 metres high, in bare brick with string courses and narrow lights. Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, the confraternity church, served as the parish meanwhile.
