Azzano d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 419 · Postal code: 14030

Azzano d'Asti, Asan in Piedmontese, sits on a hill south of the Tanaro, which crosses its flat ground. A Roman origin is presumed, the name from Adius, the landowner's family name. It first appears in a document of 897; a castle stood here before the year one thousand.

The arms set the cross of Asti above an azza, the medieval polearm that chimes with Azzano. In 937 Berengar II and bishop Bruningo willed the Benedictine monastery of San Bartolomeo here, razed in 1801. The parish church of San Giacomo Apostolo, its brick bell tower alongside, keeps the earlier building's medieval apse, dedicated to Santo Stefano.
