Vigliano d'Asti, Vijan in Piedmontese, sits on a hill of the Astesana and belongs to the Val Tiglione hill community; the whole area is UNESCO world heritage. From the hills opposite the village reads at a glance: a line of roofs on the ridge, the bell tower at one end and the brick bulk of the castle at the other.
A castle already stood here in 1130. It was destroyed, and on its ruins the De Montibus built the present house and made it their home. Reworked many times, it has lost almost all the look of a fortress; the front is nineteenth-century.
