Mongardino

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 951 · Postal code: 14040

Mongardino is all hills, and its scattered hamlets keep to the ridge tops: slopes planted mostly with vines, a few hazel groves, patches of replanted woodland. Its story follows that of the county of Asti: in 1387 the lordship went as Valentina Visconti's personal dowry to her husband Louis of Orléans, and a long tug-of-war between the French and the Visconti began.

On the Colle Sant'Antonio, in 1739, the Sacro Monte was built, a small church with eighteen Stations of the Cross; the sanctuary in the Madonna hamlet dates from 1706. From there the village shows itself along the crest, with the brick parish church of Saints Vincent and John the Baptist.
