Asti touches Liguria for barely three kilometres, all of it inside the village of Serole, an atlas footnote that gets at something real: this is inland Piedmont, boxed in by Turin to the north-west, Cuneo to the west and Alessandria to the east, with no coastline at all. Its 118 municipalities hold a little over 217,000 people, and more than a third of them live in Asti, the provincial capital.
Everything outside that one city is small. Canelli and Nizza Monferrato come next in size, both just over 10,000 residents; after them Costigliole d'Asti, Moncalvo and Castelnuovo Don Bosco, none of which reaches 6,000. It is not a province to tick off in a day with a checklist. Better to pick three or four of these towns and give them time.

On the weekend of the third Sunday of October Calliano, a municipality of 1,392 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates the Most Holy Name of Mary; in October the Palio degli asini (donkey race), the «Paglio ragliante», is also run.

On 28 October Bubbio celebrates its patron Saint Simon; the town also preserves the Santuario dei Caffi.

On 4 November Nizza Monferrato celebrates Saint Charles Borromeo: in 1613 the town made him a vow to withstand the siege by Savoy, and ever since the lion defending the cross has been on its coat of arms.

On 11 November Montemagno celebrates its patron Saint Martin of Tours; the town preserves the Castello di Montemagno Monferrato.
