Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Passerano Marmorito, a municipality of 443 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
The name appears in 1001 as Passerianus and probably comes from a farm estate: the personal name Passerius with the suffix -anus added to it. The village later belonged to the Radicati counts of Cocconato, who obtained from Charles V the restoration of the county's old autonomy and the right to strike gold and silver coin.
The Passerano mint began issuing in 1589, and struck mostly base-alloy imitations of Lombard, Venetian, Swiss, German and French pieces, which brought in large sums. In 1598 the Duke of Savoy withdrew the privilege. The mint building still stands beside the gate into the castle enclosure, and now holds the library and the civil weddings.
