Castelnuovo Don Bosco

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,260 · Postal code: 14022

Until 1930 the town was called Castelnuovo d'Asti: then it took the surname of its most famous townsman. It was one of the fourteen comuni of the Capitanato d'Astesana, held too important to be granted as fiefs and placed under the governor of Asti; but in 1618 Carlo Emanuele I, short of money, created those feudal titles anyway and put them up for sale to the highest bidder. Castelnuovo went the following year to count Ernst von Mansfeld.

During the war forty-five Jewish refugees from the Balkans were interned here, families with children among them. After 8 September 1943, under German occupation, the group — down to twenty people after transfers — scattered quickly: all of them survived, most reaching Switzerland.
