Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Cerreto d'Asti, a municipality of 220 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
Cerreto d'Asti runs along a hill ridge on a single main street, and its name says what stood there before the houses: the old Cerretum was a wood of turkey oaks. The tree went into the arms, a green oak on a mount between two red six-pointed stars, under a red chief with an eagle. In 1065 Adelaide of Susa gave the place to the bishops of Asti.
In the hamlet of Casaglio the Romanesque church of Sant'Andrea survives, raised on a knoll between the ninth and tenth centuries and reworked in the mid-seventeenth century, now a single rectangular hall. The oldest document naming the village, its church and its monastery dates from 1008, when Bishop Alrico of Asti assigned the monastery to Sant'Anastasio in Asti. Nothing else is left, because between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries the inhabitants moved to the fortified centre of Cerreto.
