Rocchetta Palafea

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 347 · Postal code: 14042

The name says what the place was: a small rocca, a garrison on a border hill above the Valle Belbo. The tower and part of its walls survive, and the coat of arms says the same: party per pale red and silver, a castle counterchanged, a central turret, Guelph merlons, black door and windows.

The tower is square, about 26 metres high, in roughly dressed tufa, and watched the roads below; its crown carries a double row of small hanging brick arches, Romanesque in manner. Restoration added an inner staircase up to the top openings. The place appears as a holding of the Colombi di Cuccaro in 960, until in 1116 the emperor Henry V granted the diocese of Acqui jurisdiction over the territory.
