Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Montabone celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Montabone looks down on the Belbo and Bormida valleys. Until 1164 the village belonged to the Church of Acqui; that year Frederick Barbarossa took it from the bishops and gave it to the marquesses of Monferrato. Its arms carry an eagle crowned in gold, wings spread, clawing a mount, with a silver mitre and crozier.
Guglielmo Caccia was born here in 1568, called il Moncalvo after the town where he settled and died. The parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate has four canvases attributed to him. Nothing is left of the castle at the top of the village: a round space is now a public garden, while the arched town gate still guards the way in.
