Mottalciata

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,431 · Postal code: 13874

In Piedmontese, Mottalciata is La Mòta dj'Alcià, the motta of the Alciati: the Vercelli family who held it, whose blazon the arms repeat, barred in blue and silver. A funerary altar attributed to the second century, now in the Biella museum, shows that people lived here in Roman times, while the fourteenth-century castle-ricetto keeps its walls on the rise above the village.

The church of San Vincenzo was largely rebuilt in the eighteenth century, but the bell tower is the earlier one, Romanesque, probably raised in the twelfth century. By the cemetery, on 17 May 1944, militiamen of the Legione Tagliamento shot seventeen partisans, taken the evening before by an informer who drugged them.
