Massazza

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 542 · Postal code: 13873

Massazza's castle stands on a spur of the Biella baraggia, but its earliest record is in Vercelli: until 1992 the village was in that province, and a charter of 1239 lists it among the Avogadro defences, where it most likely served as a prison. At first it was an enclosure and a square tower, a refuge for local people; the origin is probably Celto-Ligurian. It is now the Rocca dei Cavallari, in private hands.

The arms carry a small red chevron on silver and three stag heads, and the Latin motto makes one of them speak: you see my head struck off, severed from the neck in the slaughter of the hunt.
