Benna

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,190 · Postal code: 13871

The name Benna is traditionally traced to the Celtic benna, a hut, a straw shack: a village that starts from its poorest houses. It stands in the Biella country, on the edge of the Baragge, the heath called the last Italian savannah, a nature reserve though part of it serves for military training.

The parish church of San Pietro is Renaissance and keeps early sixteenth-century Biellese painting; behind the gable of its plastered front the brick bell tower rises with a clock, and low steps run down to the square. The village also has the oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie.
