Gifflenga

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 130 · Postal code: 13874

The name Gifflenga comes from the Germanic ghiffa, a boundary post, and is first attested in a document of 926; the same century already records the pieve of San Martino, in the Bonda quarter. The village lies along the Cervo torrent, on the road from Vercelli to Biella; it belonged first to the bishop of Vercelli, then to the Savoy and to the Avogadro and de Rege families, whose castle has left few traces.

The municipal arms gather it all: a red cloak parted by a sword for the gesture of Saint Martin, patron of the medieval pieve and then of the parish church; three rice plants, as many as the village's quarters; and a wavy blue bar for the waters of the Cervo. The pieve, which had a font as early as the tenth century, was destroyed by a flood in 1648, and the church that replaced it was built in the middle quarter, now called canton Chiesa. Rice has been grown here since the eighteenth century: the Baraggia variety.
